About Me

I'm Nicola Johnston, an independent modern celebrant based and living in East Lothian with my wife, daughter, dog and cat, who all mean the world to me. I am a warm, cheery and approachable person and, as a natural empath, I am able to make connections with a variety of people, helping nurture feelings of safety, choice and trust during difficult times and collaboratively find solutions.  I have extensive experience working alongside individuals and families with lived experience of complex trauma, helping to identify and progress lifelong aspirations and goals.

I discovered my gift for scriptwriting and coordinating heartfelt personal ceremonies when I was asked to help coordinate funeral 

arrangements for my uncle during Covid restrictions. It was then I learnt about the huge amount of 'grief admin' associated with making preparations to say goodbye to a loved one and the rigorous pace at which a 'traditional funeral' must be organised. 

Through this experience I became aware of  how complex interpersonal relationships can be within the context of grief and that I had a natural ability to 

sensitively support collaboration towards creating a meaningful and inclusive ceremony and opportunity to say goodbye.  Determined to help others using these skills, 

I completed my accredited training with The Academy of Modern Celebrancy in early 2025 and have never looked back. 

I can't explain what an incredible sense of privilege and accomplishment I feel from working alongside individuals and families to 

create and deliver authentic, heartfelt and memorable ceremonies and events. 

Funeral Ceremonies 

My fee is £225.  This includes an information-gathering session, and the writing and  

delivery of a personalised ceremony.

This fee is for funeral ceremonies within East Lothian, Midlothian and Edinburgh only. 

Additional travel costs will apply outside of these areas. 

Celebrations of Life/Memorial Events

I would be delighted to discuss tailored celebration-of-life events/memorial packages and costings including scattering of ashes 

ceremonies. As an experienced tour guide working all over Scotland, I have in-depth expertise in planning and leading group events. Together we can creatively explore a variety of ideas, venues and settings that feel right for you and help to build a bespoke event for remembering and celebrating life.
